So youâre thinking about doing a lease purchase? Or maybe youâre already on the phone with a recruiter who swears âitâs a walkaway lease and youâll be your own boss in no time.â Mmmkay. đ§
Let me stop you right there, friend.
This ainât the blog where I scream âDONâT DO IT!â and log off. This is the blog where I tell you how not to get played, because Iâve been there. Iâve done it. And I learned the hard way.
If youâre gonna go the lease purchase route, cool, but you better walk in that office (or Zoom, or phone call) with real questions. Not just âhow much is the truck?â and âhow soon can I start?â You need to ask the stuff they donât want you asking.
So letâs break it down.
đ» 1. What kind of truck are we talking about?
Don’t get finessed into a mystery truck. Ask:
- What make, model, and year is the truck?
- How many miles are on it right now?
- Does it come with any kind of warranty?
- If the engine fails, who pays? (Be real clear on this.)
- Am I allowed to customize or add equipment?
These questions are just the beginning. Youâre not just leasing a truck, youâre leasing the potential for a whole lot of bills if you donât read the fine print.
đ 2. Whatâs really in that lease?
Read it twice. Then again. Now ask:
- Is this a walkaway lease? Whatâs the catch?
- Are there penalties if I break it early?
- Is there a balloon payment at the end?
- When do I start paying â first load or first key turn?
Donât let them hit you with that âjust sign hereâ energy. This is a contract. And if something smells fishy? Walk.
𧰠3. Maintenance Account: Who controls it?
Theyâll probably say, âWe got you! Weâll just take a little each week for your maintenance account.â But ask this:
- How much comes out of my check weekly?
- Can I pick my own repair shop, or do I gotta use yours?
- Do I get my maintenance money back if I leave the company? đ Because if youâre locked into their overpriced shop every time you need a fix, that âmaintenance fundâ might be gone before you even see it. Be careful of forced repair shop policies.
- Can I use my escrow funds whenever I want?
Donât play around with this part. If your truck breaks down and your âfundâ is locked or missing? Youâll be sick.
đ” 4. How am I getting paid?
Letâs talk money, real money.
- Do I get paid percentage or per mile?
- Is dispatch forced, or can I say no to loads?
- Will I get local, regional, or OTR freight?
- Will I have access to a load board, or is it all assigned?
- What happens if your truck goes down? đdo they charge you for a loaner, or are you just stuck waiting? That downtime can kill your pockets if youâre still paying the lease with no wheels turning.
Letâs be real: a truck note donât pay itself. Make sure your freight is consistent and the rates make sense, or else youâll just be working to pay them back.
đŸ 5. What support do I really have?
This ainât a solo journey, even when youâre âindependent.â Ask:
- Is there a rider policy or pet policy?
- If my truck breaks down, do I get a loaner?
- Whoâs responsible for trailer repairs?
- Do I need to carry my own insurance, or do they take it out?
- Do I need my own bobtail and physical damage insurance, or is it built into the weekly deduction? And is it even good coverage, or just the bare minimum?
And ask if they provide fuel discounts, tire discounts, or roadside assistance â some do, and some will charge you extra for the same.
đ Red Flags You Should NEVER Ignore
đ© They canât give you the truck VIN or year
đ© They dodge questions about early termination
đ© You canât read the full lease before orientation
đ© Thereâs no clarity on maintenance fund access
đ© Youâre told âyouâll find out once you startâ
đ© They donât explain what happens to your escrow if you leave â or worse, act like itâs non-refundable
đ Oh, and trailer ownership? Thatâs a whole different headache. Iâm breaking that down in a separate blog soon â peep this post on trailer leases when youâre ready to go there. (Weâll replace the # with the real link later.)
