The CDL Physical Checklist I Live By Now (After Damn Near Failing)

I remember standing in that cold-ass exam room thinking, “If my BP don’t drop, this whole job might slip through my fingers.”

Mind you, I never had blood pressure problems, not until I got pregnant and was diagnosed with preeclampsia (worst thing ever, btw).

Ever since then, waiting in that exam room became a whole nerve-wrecker for me. I just knew I couldn’t play around. One number off, and it’s back to square one.

Ever since then, that lil’ exam room got me tight every time. I’m talking sweaty palms, deep breathing, hoping everything checks out so I can keep working and providing for mine. Because when you’re a trucker, especially a mama trucker, this ain’t just about you. It’s about everybody that eats off your grind.

So, instead of gatekeeping what helped me pass, I’m dropping 5 gems that’ll help you walk in ready. All facts. Let’s go!

💎 1. Start Drinking Water Like You’re Training for the Olympics

Listen… soda and sweet tea ain’t hydration, baby. These DOT folks want to see your urine clear and your pressure steady. A gallon a day might sound like a lot, but it’ll save you from a bad reading. I start flushing my system at least 3 days before my physical. No excuses. Just gallon jugs and minding my business.

💎 2. Cut Salt and Sugar Like You Got Something to Lose (Because You Do)

I love me some seasoned food, I’m not about to lie to y’all. But before a physical? I switch it up. No processed snacks, no fast food, and definitely no heavy late-night meals. That sodium will have your BP acting a fool and that sugar spike can mess with your levels. I stick to whole foods and lean proteins for a few days… think salmon, chicken, spinach, fruit. Nothing wild, just clean.

💎 3. Bring the Paperwork, Don’t Be That Person😑

If you wear contacts, take meds, or got a CPAP, bring that documentation. Don’t have them waiting. Don’t have them guessing. Walk in like a pro with your records, meds list, and anything else they need. It’s giving grown woman energy, period.

💎 4. Calm Your Nerves Before the Cuff Wraps Around Your Arm

That lil’ machine don’t know your anxiety, it just sees numbers. Take deep breaths, do some box breathing in the car if you need to, and don’t be scared to ask them to retake it if it feels off. One bad reading isn’t the end unless you let it be.

💎 5. Get Sleep Like Your License Depends on It (Because It Kinda Does)

If you walk in sleepy, sluggish, and stressed, it shows. Your body is gonna react. Get 6–8 hours of sleep the night before, no excuses. If you’re a night shift warrior like me, try to get on a normal schedule just for that night so your system isn’t all over the place.

🗣️ Final Word, From One Trucker to Another…

We carry the world, literally. But if your health ain’t solid, everything else falls apart. The physical exam ain’t out to get you, but you gotta prep for it like it matters. And I promise you, once you start treating your health like the golden ticket it is, everything in your life hits different.

We out here chasing bags, but we gotta protect the body that’s hauling them.
