New Truckers, Stop Doing This Dumb Sh*t (Respectfully)

Let me say this with love, because it’s always love over here, but some of y’all out here wildin’ behind the wheel and in these contracts. And I’m not talking about lil’ slip ups. I’m talking about moves that will wreck your pockets, your health, your career… and you just got here.

So before you end up broke, stressed, or on TikTok crying about “this company did me wrong,”
let’s fix it now.

🧠1. Being Scared to Ask Questions

“I didn’t wanna sound dumb” is how you end up in dumb situations. Period. Ask. The. Damn. Questions. Don’t know where to fuel? Ask. Confused about the routing? Ask. Not sure how to use the scale or secure your load? Ask. No one expects you to know it all, but the moment you pretend you do, you stop learning. And that’s where the real danger creeps in.

🔧 2. Skipping Pre-Trips Like They Optional

You roll up, crank the engine, and hit the highway like “We good.”
No, you not.

That 10 minutes you saved skipping your walk around?
That’s how long it’ll take for that blowout, air leak, or bad gladhand to ruin your whole day.

And please stop lying in the inspection box like you checked everything.
DOT don’t care about your excuses, only your fines.

🛠️ Gem: Treat your pre-trip like brushing your teeth, not optional, just necessary.
The truck will always tell on you if you don’t.

⏰ 3. Running Outta Hours Like It’s a Surprise

You ever seen a rookie try to stretch their clock like it’s elastic?
“Man, I just need to get to this drop real quick.” Nah, you need to park.

Running out of hours mid-route, at 2 a.m., with nowhere to go?
Now you the one blocking the ramp praying DOT don’t pull up.

Your ELD ain’t your enemy, your poor planning is.
If you don’t understand how to run recaps, you gon’ learn the hard way.

Don’t play with that clock. Know when to shut it down. Trip plan like a grown-up. Dispatch ain’t going to jail for you, and “I thought I had more time” don’t count when DOT pulls your logs.

🕓 Gem: Don’t race your clock, respect it.
You ain’t making more money if you can’t legally drive to spend it.

💨 4. Taking Trash Loads Just to “Stay Busy”

I get it — the truck note coming. You don’t wanna sit.
But stop saying yes to every low-paying, no-backhaul, pain-in-the-ass load that dispatch throws your way.

“Keep you moving” don’t mean keep you paid.
You can move all week and still come home with nothing, but bad miles and stress.

🧾 Gem: Don’t move for movement, move for money.
Know your worth per mile, or somebody else will write your value for you.

💀 5. Getting Too Comfortable Too Fast

Rookies get that first smooth month and suddenly think they seasoned.
Then boom… missed turns, bad backing, and a whole trailer stuck in the grass.

The road don’t owe you comfort.
The moment you stop learning, it’ll remind you who’s boss.

Stay humble. Ask questions. Watch how older drivers move.
They ain’t slow, they’re strategic.

This is your money.. at the end of the day.

Let me say this again: I want you to win out here. This game can change your life if you play it smart. But trucking ain’t forgiving, it will expose what you don’t know, fast.

So don’t rush the process. Don’t act like you too good to learn. And don’t let fear, pride, or pressure push you into dumb decisions that cost you everything.

You made it this far — now stay in the game.

And if nobody told you today? I’m proud of you for even stepping into this industry. Now go be great. ✌🏽
